Sustainability / Green Event
We are committed to sustainability – The Widdebierglaf is a Green Event!
Since 2013, the Widdebiergfrënn Asbl. has been organizing the Widdebierglaf. From the very beginning, sustainability and social responsibility have been important to us. Over the years, we have continuously improved and implemented these principles in the organization of the event.
Since 2022, we have officially been organizing the Widdebierglaf as a Green Event (www.greenevents.lu).
Here are some key aspects that we prioritize during the organization and execution of the Widdebierglaf:
Food & Drinks
• The food and drinks we offer are locally sourced or certified with labels such as “Produit du Terroir” (for meat, fries, etc.), Fairtrade (for bananas for runners, coffee, etc.), or organic (for beer, oranges for runners, etc.).
• The water provided to runners before and during the race comes from the Widdebierg spring in Mensdorf.
Materials
• We avoid single-use materials:
• For several years, we have been providing reusable cups for water along the course.
• Since 2022, we have been using washable and reusable fry containers to reduce unnecessary waste.
• We borrow equipment from the municipality or local associations in Mensdorf whenever possible. We also lend out our own equipment to other organizations.
• Over the years, we have reduced the number of flyers and posters. Any printed materials are now produced on recycled, non-laminated paper.
• Any T-shirts, hoodies, or other apparel we produce for the club are made from Fairtrade or organic cotton. These garments are usually designed and printed in a protected workshop.
Waste Management
• All waste generated before, during, and after the event is properly sorted and recycled.
Additional Sustainability Efforts
• We offer a shuttle service after the race to transport runners to the changing rooms and showers and back to the festival area.
• All proceeds from the event are donated to charity. Over the past ten years, we have raised more than €60,000 for good causes.
